Flesch Reading Ease plus five US grade-level scores — Flesch-Kincaid Grade, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau and the Automated Readability Index — and an average grade.
For a general audience, aim for a Flesch Reading Ease of 60–70 (plain English, around 8th–9th grade). Higher is easier; specialist writing naturally scores lower.
They're estimates derived from word, sentence and syllable patterns (syllables are approximated heuristically), so use them as a directional guide rather than an absolute.
